Did someone say Free Breakfast and Lunch? We are happy to say your school morning prep just got easier. School Breakfast and Lunch will be Free for ALL students for the ' 21-'22 school year.
However, we still need families to apply for free and reduced-priced meals! The Petersburg School District is working to build consumer awareness about the Emergency Broadband Benefit, a new Federal Communications Commission program. The temporary benefit will help to lower the cost of broadband service for eligible households during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. The program provides a discount of up to a $50 per month toward broadband service for eligible households and up to a $100 per household discount toward a one-time purchase of a computer, laptop, or tablet if the household contributes more than $10 and less than $50 toward the purchase through a participating broadband provider. There are income eligibility requirements for the program, but families could be eligible if they experienced a substantial loss of income through job loss or furlough since February 2020. Emergency Broadband Benefit enrollment will open on May 12th. Eligible households can enroll through a participating broadband provider or directly with the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) using an online or mail-in application. https://www.getemergencybroadband.org/

~News From the Lunchroom~
Breakfast
The Petersburg School Board has approved our school as a “Universal Breakfast” school. This means we will be serving students breakfast in their classrooms. Some breakfast options they may see are cinnamon roll, cereal, bagel bites, string cheese, sausage, english muffin, yogurt with granola, and pop tarts.
Lunch
Kindergarteners, 1st and 5th graders will be eating lunch in the cafeteria. Grades 2nd - 4th students will be given a meal that has silverware, napkin, condiments for the main entree, milk, vegetables, and a fruit to eat in the classroom. Students may bring lunch to school if preferred.
~Salad Bar will not be a choice until further notice~
~A salad entree will be available to 5th grade only ~

USDA has extended the eligibility for Summer Food Service Programs for all children through May 31, 2021. What does this mean for the Petersburg Borough School District? We are able to feed all students free lunch and breakfast!
We will still require parents to fill out the school free or reduced-priced applications through schoolcafe.com or through a paper application for Middle and Elementary students. These applications have made it possible for us to offer this free food service to our community. This shows that we are truly in need of these program flexibilities.
We ask that if your children are going to participate in our meal program, they let their teacher know when they arrive at school so the Food Service staff has an accurate meal count for the day.
If your child is not in school due to virtual learning, quarantine, they are not old enough for school yet or other reasons, you may pick up a meal from the Elementary School Cafeteria via the outside loading dock back door. This service will only be available from 12:15 to 1:00 pm Monday through Friday. We do ask that you email Carlee at cjohnson@pcsd.us if you are picking up so we can get a count.
~News From the Counselor~
Newsletter from our Counselor. Mrs. Etcher works with all grades on social emotional skills, and she would like to share a monthly newsletter with families. The idea is to keep everyone updated on lessons she is teaching each month. Website: https://sites.google.com/pcsd.us/stedman-elementary-counselor/monthly-newsletter
There are free dinners being offered in our loving community and we just want the word to be out. Mondays, 5-6pm: Narrows Inn, across from ferry terminal. Wednesdays, 6pm: First Baptist Church, Gjoa St. All meals are pre-packaged, so people can just grab and go.
It is important to talk to your child about sexual abuse and we know it can be hard to know what to say or do. It is never too early or too late to start. Here is a link to a great resource:
Committee for Children’s Hot Chocolate Talk https://www.cfchildren.org/resources/child-abuse-prevention/
This is a comprehensive resource for any caregiver wanting to have a cozy chat with a child about safety. Downloadable guides for every age and videos help guide you through connecting and covering basic rules for safety.
~Safety Information~
Important safety information: When dropping students off at the playground end, please note that there is a designated drop-off area marked by the side of the playground fence. Vehicles enter the area following the arrows and drop off students at the painted white rectangles. Students go directly to the playground area, and vehicles immediately exit, alleviating congestion and keeping the area safe. If you wish to escort your child or wait and watch your child enter the school, you will need to find a parking spot. Thank you for helping us keep all students safe.
~Happy Birthday to Who?~

Stedman Handbook: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1N3uU1WGu6jkxuMjVoyBLkjFrGNV_pgkn1eEDrt3IAe0/edit?usp=sharing (Appendix C will provide you with our masking and social distancing protocols)
~PSD COVID Travel Policy~
Due to growing concern in the community related to travel within the state, an updated travel protocol will be in effect for intrastate travel. This essentially mirrors the current out of state travel protocols for returning to school/work for staff and students per State of Alaska Mandate 10, revised 10.16.20. This travel protocol will be reviewed during each upcoming board meeting as conditions continue to change. Here are the highlights:
Staff or Students returning from in-state and out-of-state airline or AMHS travel (lasting longer than 72 hours):
1. PSD staff/students will take a COVID-19 test at the Petersburg Airport upon return from travel (Day 0). Children 10 and under are not required to test, but must follow parent/guardian travel testing protocol. Travelers arriving by AMHS ferry may utilize the State Travel Portal to receive a test at the airport, just as if they had arrived by air.
2. PSD staff/students will practice strict social distancing** until the results of the Day 0 test results are back.
3. Once they have received negative test results, PSD staff/students will continue to practice strict social distancing for the remaining 5 days after their original arrival date.
4. PSD staff/students are recommended, but not required to have a second COVID-19 test at the Petersburg Airport on Day 7+.
5. PSD staff/students may report back to school at PSD on Day 6, with negative test results/boarding pass and if they are symptom-free.
6. Students should attend classes remotely if offered, and parent/student will coordinate with the classroom teacher to determine make-up work.
7. PSD staff/students may quarantine for 14 days after they return from travel without testing.
8. PSD staff/students will self-monitor for symptoms for 14 days after return and promptly report symptoms.
9. PSD staff/students who travel for less than 72 hours are not required to test or quarantine, but should self-monitor for 14 days for any symptoms.
** Strict Social Distancing is defined as:
-May be in outdoor spaces but must be 3 feet away from anyone not in your household and must wear a mask.
-Curbside shopping or food delivery okay.
-Cannot enter restaurants, bars, gyms, community centers, sporting facilities, office buildings, school or daycare facilities.
-No group activities like sports, practices, weddings, funerals, etc.
The district requires a copy of the traveler's boarding pass and negative test result in order to implement the five-day option. Staff/students are strongly encouraged to take the recommended 2nd test after day 7+, if possible.
The only way to reduce the 14-day requirement is with at least one negative test.

TECH TIP: Boredom is good for developing brains? There is research that suggests taking extended brain breaks from our entertainment devices (and allowing the mind to wander) can foster creativity, new ideas, and even independence.
