PHS- Chemistry II with Mrs. Ward The incredible educators from Alaska Resource Education engaged Mrs. Ward’s Chemistry II students in an interactive session on electricity and solar energy. Students learned about the science behind solar panels and then took a hands-on approach by building their own solar-powered bugs. They put their creations to the test in exciting races, applying what they learned about renewable energy and electricity in a fun way.

We spent last week learning about Alaska's natural resources with Alaska Resource Education (ARE) from Anchorage. Our days were spent learning about electricity and energy by making solar bugs ☀️investigating rocks and minerals 🪨 and looking for "valuable resources" while mining (in birdseed) ⚒️. It was so fun and we learned so much. Thank you ARE for traveling down from up north to Southeast! We hope you get to come again 😀

We are still recruiting for THIS school year. We are looking to add an afternoon/evening full-time 10-month custodian to the staff, and another full-time 9-month Paraprofessional to the Special Education department. Apply at alaskateacher.org These positions earn benefits year-round but have a school-year schedule. We are also looking to add two certified teachers to the staff. We are ready to begin recruiting teachers for next year! Do you know a teacher who should move to Petersburg and join our wonderful district? We are looking for a Secondary Math Teacher (they will likely teach a mix of HS/MS math). What about a School Counselor? If you know anyone who might fit these positions, send them to apply at alaskateacher.org and search Petersburg under "Districts". Questions? Reach out to Mara at 877-526-7656 x 100

🦖Last week 6th and 7th grade students in Earth & Space Science got to zoom chat with Professor Paul McCarthy at the University of Alaska Fairbanks to learn about what Alaska used to look like roughly 100 million years ago. Professor McCarthy is an expert in fossil soils, also known as paleopedology; nonmarine sedimentary deposition; paleoclimate reconstruction with particular emphasis on high-latitude or paleo-Arctic and Cretaceous environments. Students has so many questions to ask him about his work that we had to cut them off because class was ending! Big shout-out to Professor McCarthy for taking time out of his busy teaching schedule up north to provide some real-life examples of relative and absolute dating in Alaska.🦕

Baking Club had made their first treat, chocolate chip cookies, and they were DELICIOUS! We officially had our first baking fail of the year too 😂 The bakers were resilient and thought of all sorts of creative ways to eat their flattened cookies. They had a blast and are looking forward to our next club meeting to make something pumpkiny. Tis the season 🎃 👻

Our middle school art students have been busy exploring different techniques and media! 🌳 We began by practicing drawing ovals, cylinders, and cones to create trees and branches, developing skills for drawing intricate trees with multiple limbs. Afterward, we transitioned to an oil pastel project, celebrating the start of the fall season. 🍂 In late September, students learned the proportions of portrait drawing through a set of guidelines. "Start by drawing one eye and use it as a measure for the rest of your portrait." 🖌️ Students applied these rules, using graphite H and B pencils to add value, and completed a half-printed portrait, building up depth and shading. Now, we're diving into clay work! The MS art students are hand-building with clay, learning techniques like wedging, maintaining proper thickness, and the "cross-hatch and attach" method for joining pieces. We’re taking inspiration from Tim Burton characters for our clay projects—stay tuned for some spooky and creative pieces! 👻✨
